Vek Spitter

Small, green, and always three tiles ahead of your punch.

The Vek Spitter is one of the most recognizable and frequently encountered enemy types in Into the Breach. A small, bulbous, greenish-teal creature with a wide maw and stubby legs, it serves as the Vek's basic ranged harasser. Where the Vek Brute shoves and the Vek Charger rams, the Spitter keeps its distance and lobs corrosive globules at your mechs from a few tiles away.

As the entry-level ranged threat in the Vek arsenal, the Spitter appears in an enormous number of missions across every campaign. It is the enemy players first learn to flank, bait, and crush under a falling boulder, and its simple but effective projectile attack makes it a staple of tactical positioning puzzles throughout the game.

Lore & Background

The Vek are a hive-minded species of alien organisms that descended upon a ruined industrial world, claiming its shattered grid-tiles as territory. Their biology is soft, segmented, and wet, a stark contrast to the rigid steel-and-hydraulics of the mechs that defend the planet. The Spitter represents the Vek's most numerous and least armored caste: a disposable ranged unit, bred in swarms to pin down and soften targets before heavier Vek close the distance.

In the Vek's collective, the Spitter holds no individual identity. It is a function—a mouth that opens, a sac that contracts, a globule that arcs through the air and detonates on impact. The Vek do not strategize in the way a commander would; rather, the Spitter simply reacts to the nearest mech within its effective range, spitting in short bursts. This makes it deceptively dangerous in groups: a cluster of four Spitters can pin a mech in a corner, forcing the player to choose which ally to sacrifice or which terrain hazard to trigger.

Fans often note that the Spitter's design is deliberately unimposing. It has no visible eyes, no armor plating, no weapon barrels. It is almost comically round, like a green water balloon with feet. Yet that very simplicity is what makes it so effective in a grid-based tactical system: it occupies one tile, it attacks from two, and it does not need to get close to hurt you. In a game where every tile matters, the Spitter's range is a small but persistent headache.

In Their Own Story

The morning fog still clung to the cracked concrete tiles when the Spitter opened its maw. It had been sitting there for three turns, watching the Vanguard mech shuffle two tiles to the left, trying to line up a boulder drop. The Spitter did not care about the boulder. It did not care about the mech's shield. It simply tilted its bulbous head, the wet membrane of its throat contracting with a soft, gurgling squelch, and a pale green globule arced through the mist.

The Vanguard's pilot saw it coming. Two tiles. Always two tiles. She had memorized the arc in a dozen previous engagements. She sidestepped right, and the globule splattered against the rusted wall of a collapsed factory, hissing acid into the concrete. The Spitter tilted again, already preparing the next shot, and somewhere behind it the low, wet chitter of a Brute announced that the real problem was about to close the gap.

Reader's Guide

The Vek Spitter is a single-tile, small-sized enemy that attacks at a range of two tiles. It moves a short distance each turn (typically two tiles) and prioritizes the nearest mech within its spit range. Its attack is a single projectile that deals damage to the targeted mech; it does not move to close distance if a mech is adjacent, making it vulnerable to melee-focused strategies.

In early missions the Spitter appears alone or in pairs, serving as a gentle introduction to ranged threats. As campaigns progress, you will see groups of three to five Spitters clustered together, often flanking a Brute or Charger. Their combined range creates overlapping kill-zones that can corner a mech in a two-by-two area, forcing you to use terrain drops, ally shielding, or sacrifice moves to break the formation.

A larger variant, sometimes called the Big Vek Spitter, appears in later or harder missions. It occupies the same single tile but deals increased damage and may have a slightly extended range. It shares the same basic behavior—keep distance, spit, repeat—but its higher damage output means a single hit can threaten a mech's survival, making it a priority target for boulder drops and ally focus fire.

Key counter-strategies: use a mech's movement to step out of the two-tile range before the Spitter acts; position a Brute or Charger to threaten the Spitter's tile so it must move away from its preferred range; and use terrain hazards (gases, boulders) to eliminate multiple Spitters in a single move.
