Vek Lasher
A spiky, single-tile stinger that punishes anyone who lingers on the adjacent square.
The Vek Lasher is one of the most fundamental hostile creatures in Into the Breach, serving as a baseline melee threat that introduces players to the core combat loop of the game. It is a compact, single-tile organism of the Vek swarms—a spiky, organic entity that relies on a long, whipping appendage to strike anything that strays into its immediate reach. Because it appears in some of the earliest missions, the Lasher becomes one of the first foes a player learns to read, outmaneuver, and eliminate before it can chip away at a Mech's health.
Though it lacks the exotic abilities of later Vek designs, the Lasher's simplicity is deceptive. In tight grid corridors or when multiple Lashers cluster around a Mech, their combined adjacent strikes can quickly overwhelm even a well-armored unit. Understanding the Lasher's single-tile movement and one-tile attack range is the first tactical lesson every Breach pilot learns.

Lore & Background
The Vek are an alien biomass that has consumed the world's surface, leaving behind a fractured grid of ruined structures and toxic terrain. Within that biomass, the Lasher occupies a relatively low rung of the creature hierarchy. It is a fast, expendable organism—more reflex than thought—designed to swarm, latch, and tear. Its body is a knot of chitinous spines and sinew, and its signature weapon is a long, barbed lasher that it whips forward in a single, snapping arc. In the field, a Lasher does not plan; it simply lunges at whatever is nearest and strikes with the full force of its muscle.
Pilot communities often describe the Lasher as the 'hello' the Vek say to a newly deployed Mech. It is the first thing that tests whether a player understands the grid, the turn order, and the importance of keeping distance. Unlike the heavier Vek constructs that appear in later stages—creatures that spit acid, split into fragments, or occupy multiple tiles—the Lasher is a pure, honest melee threat. It will not flank across the board. It will not lob a projectile. It will simply step one square closer and hit for two. That predictability is what makes it a teaching tool and, in numbers, a genuine danger.
In the broader Vek ecology, Lashers appear to be produced in large quantities, suggesting they serve as a disposable vanguard. When a Mech unit engages a cluster, the Lashers absorb the first hits, buying time for slower, more dangerous organisms to close the distance. Pilots who treat a Lasher as 'just a 2-HP bug' and ignore it while focusing on a bigger target will quickly learn the cost of that assumption.
In Their Own Story
The rain fell in thin, acidic sheets across the shattered plaza, each droplet hissing where it struck the cracked grid-tiles. Kael crouched behind a half-collapsed wall, watching the Lasher circle the open square three tiles ahead. Its spines glistened with a faint bioluminescent sheen, and the long lasher at the rear of its body coiled and uncoiled like a resting snake.
One tile to the left, a second Lasher was already turning, its chitinous legs scraping the tile edge. Two tiles to the right, the third was still facing away, but Kael could see the subtle shift in its posture—the tell that meant it would rotate on the next turn.
She had one action left. Step forward, strike the nearest Lasher, and pray the other two didn't converge. The grid hummed beneath her boots, each square a decision, each decision a small death waiting to happen. Kael exhaled, locked her targeting reticle on the first Lasher's spine-cluster, and committed.
Reader's Guide
The Vek Lasher is a single-tile melee enemy with a movement range of 1 and an attack range of 1. Each turn it will attempt to move one tile toward the nearest Mech (or ally unit) and then strike for 2 damage if it ends its turn adjacent to a target. It has 2 HP, meaning most Mech units can eliminate it in a single hit, but it can also take down a Mech in one or two hits depending on the unit's armor.
Because its movement is limited to one tile, the Lasher is easy to kite: simply stay two or more tiles away and it will never reach you. The real danger comes in clusters. Two or three Lashers positioned on different sides of a Mech can each land a 2-damage hit in the same turn, quickly depleting a unit's health before the player can reposition.
The Lasher does not possess a special ability, does not split, and does not evolve into a different form. It appears in early-to-mid campaign missions and in many skirmish and challenge stages. In later, harder missions, you will frequently see four or five Lashers deployed alongside heavier Vek, forcing you to triage which threats to eliminate first. A common tactic is to use a ranged unit (like the Wasp or the Goliath at range) to snipe Lashers before they close, preserving melee units for larger targets.
Watch for Lashers positioned behind cover or in corners where they can only be reached from one or two directions. Their single-tile movement means they can 'park' on a tile and wait, making them a persistent nuisance if you are forced to fight in a narrow corridor.
Did You Know?
- The Vek Lasher is one of the first enemy types most players encounter, making it the de facto tutorial foe for learning grid-based combat in Into the Breach.
- Despite its simple 1-move, 1-range profile, a cluster of three or four Lashers can deal enough combined damage in a single turn to kill a standard Mech unit outright.
- The Lasher occupies only a single grid tile, which means it can be squeezed into narrow one-tile-wide corridors where larger, multi-tile Vek creatures cannot follow.
- In the game's challenge and daily-mission modes, Lashers are frequently paired with Vek that have special abilities, forcing players to decide whether to spend actions on the 'simple' Lasher or save them for the more dan
