Into the Breach Codexery

Vek Digger

Small, hungry, and able to tunnel straight through your defensive line.

The Vek Digger is one of the most recognizable frontline enemies in Into the Breach, a small but tenacious insectoid creature that haunts the early stages of the campaign. Named for its signature burrowing locomotion, the Digger can slip through terrain that would block a mech or other Vek, making it a deceptively tricky opponent despite its modest size and melee-only armament.

As a recurring fixture across many missions, the Digger serves as the Vek's tireless ground-level worker and skirmisher. It rarely appears alone in later stages, often flanking Blasters, Spitters, or larger Vek to create layered threats that force the player to manage positioning carefully on the grid.

Lore & Background

The Vek are an alien collective that poured through a rift into a world of angular plateaus, alien flora, and scattered human settlements. Among their many castes, the Digger is the most numerous and the most patient. Where a Blaster hurls acid from a distance or a Titan crushes everything in its path, the Digger simply *digs*—punching its chitinous limbs through rock, rubble, and even the foundations of ruined structures to reposition itself in a single turn. To a mech pilot watching from a ridge, a Digger vanishing into the ground and re-emerging three tiles away feels less like movement and more like a small, furious earthquake.

Vek biology is organic and hive-oriented. The Digger's exoskeleton is a mottled greenish-brown, its mandibles designed for both combat and excavation. It does not speak or signal; it simply responds to the presence of mechs with a grinding, rhythmic thrumming that pilots learn to dread. In the Vek's broader strategy, Diggers are the vanguard that close the gap, the tireless units that ensure a mech never gets a safe tile to breathe.

Fans of the game often joke that the Digger is the 'unfair' enemy because its digging ability lets it ignore the very terrain a player has been using as cover. A carefully placed rock formation that blocks a Blaster's line of sight means nothing to a Digger that simply tunnels beneath it and appears in your mech's flank.

In Their Own Story

The plateau was quiet for eleven turns. Then the ground shuddered.

Sgt. Yara watched the dust settle where no Digger had been a moment before. Three tiles to the east, a fissure split the basalt. A pair of segmented legs, slick with mineral dust, poked through. Then the whole creature, small and furious, hauled itself upright and locked its mandibles onto the nearest mech's chassis.

"They're under the ridge," she muttered into the comms. "They've always been under the ridge."

The grid blinked its cold white lines. The Digger did not blink. It just kept digging.

Reader's Guide

The Vek Digger is a single-tile melee enemy. Its primary attack range is the four (or eight, depending on grid orientation) adjacent tiles, dealing a fixed amount of damage to any mech it can reach. It has no ranged attack, so it must close distance to threaten your units.

Its defining trait is the Dig ability: the Digger can move through terrain tiles that would normally block movement for mechs and other Vek. In practice this means it can bypass rocks, debris, and structural obstacles in a single move, often repositioning to a tile directly adjacent to a mech that the player believed was safely behind cover. Plan your terrain usage with this in mind—what protects you from a Blaster's splash does not protect you from a Digger's tunnel.

In early missions the Digger often appears in pairs or small clusters, forcing you to split your mech's attention. In later, more complex missions it is frequently paired with ranged Vek (Blasters, Spitters) or larger threats (Maw, Titan), creating a layered problem: you must deal with the ranged pressure while also preventing a Digger from slipping behind your line. Because it is small and fast on the grid, it can also be used to bait a mech into a position where a larger Vek can strike.

There is no in-mission 'evolution' for the Digger, but its frequency and the complexity of the terrain it must navigate increase as the campaign progresses, making the same basic unit feel significantly more dangerous by the final acts.
