Mandible

One bite, and the grid rearranges itself around the wreckage.

Mandible is one of the eight playable Vanguard mechs in Into the Breach, the turn-based tactical strategy game by Subset Games. Distinguished by its massive, articulated jaw-claw that dominates the front of its chassis, Mandible is the quintessential close-quarters brawler of the roster. Where other mechs rely on range, speed, or brute mass, Mandible wins by closing the distance and delivering a crushing bite that reshapes the grid around it.

In the game's post-apocalyptic setting, Mandible operates alongside its fellow mechs to hold the line against the Vermithrax—swarming, otherworldly creatures pouring through a dimensional rift known as the Breach. Its role is straightforward but critical: it is the unit you send into the thick of an enemy cluster to break formations, grab stragglers, and deny them the space they need to coordinate their next assault.

Lore & Background

In the world of Into the Breach, the dimensional rift that gives the game its title has torn open a wound in reality through which the Vermithrax pour in endless, chittering waves. The only thing standing between the creatures and the last pockets of human settlement is a small cadre of heavily armed mechs, each one a purpose-built platform with a distinct silhouette and combat doctrine. Mandible was engineered for one job above all others: get inside the enemy's guard and end the conversation with a single, devastating clamp of its jaw. Its designers prioritized reach and bite-force over speed or armor, trusting that a well-placed grab could neutralize even the largest of the Vermithrax before they could regroup.

The mechs of the Breach are not merely machines; the game's visual language and narrative framing treat them as distinct personalities. Mandible's chunky, forward-leaning posture, the way its jaw hangs open and ready, and the heavy plating around its shoulder joints all communicate a creature that has been built to be the last thing an enemy sees. In the quiet moments between waves, it idles with its claw slightly agape, almost patient, as though it can smell the next threat from three tiles away.

Fans of the game often describe Mandible as the 'reliable friend' of the roster—the mech you reach for when the board is crowded and you need a guaranteed, no-fuss way to remove a threat from the equation. It may not have the flashy range of a Turret or the darting speed of a Wasp, but in a pinched, close-quarters fight, its bite is the one you trust to land.

In Their Own Story

The grid was tight. Three tiles of cracked concrete, a shattered overpass, and the Vermithrax swarming in from the north like a slow tide of chitin and clicking mandibles. Mandible rolled forward, its heavy treads grinding against the broken asphalt, the jaw-claw swinging wide with each step. It could feel the heat of the creatures' bioluminescent cores through its forward sensors.

It didn't need a plan. It never did.

Two tiles. One. The largest of the swarm—a Goliath-class, all folded limbs and dripping acid—reared up to meet it. Mandible's jaw snapped shut around the creature's thorax with a sound like a vault door slamming, and the grid shuddered. The Goliath's legs kicked, scrabbling, but the bite held. Mandible dragged it two squares to the left, right into the path of the Scythe's waiting arc.

The blade sang. The Goliath fell.

Mandible released the carcass, its jaw clicking shut with a satisfied hydraulic hiss, and rolled back into position. Three more tiles to the next wave. It could wait. It was good at waiting.

Reader's Guide

Mandible is the player's close-range specialist in Into the Breach. There is no separate named pilot; the operator is the player, directing the mech's movements and attacks tile by tile on the grid.

Base profile: Mandible sits in the mid-to-high HP range for the roster, trading some of that durability for a powerful Attack stat and a solid Defense value. Its movement is short-range, reflecting its role as a unit that must be delivered into the fight rather than one that can reposition freely.

Special ability: Mandible's signature move centers on its jaw-claw. In combat, it can execute a grab or pull action, repositioning an enemy Vermithrax on the grid. This is tactically powerful because it lets you drag a dangerous creature into a hazard tile, away from your other mechs, or into the path of an ally's attack. The ability rewards spatial thinking: the best Mandible players treat the grid like a chessboard, using the bite not just to damage but to rearrange the enemy's formation before the next turn.

Timeline fit: Mandible is available from the very first wave of a campaign, making it one of the default choices for new players. As the campaign progresses and the Vermithrax grow larger and more numerous, Mandible's grab-and-reposition tool becomes increasingly valuable against high-value targets that you cannot simply kill in one hit. It is the mech you keep in your rotation throughout the entire arc of the Breach, from the first small swarm to the final, desperate stand.
