Sawtooth
A roaring wall of steel teeth that turns bug swarms into scrap.
Sawtooth is a heavy-attack melee mech in Into the Breach, serving as the primary damage dealer within the Vanguard squad. Distinguished by its massive rotating circular saw blade mounted on the front of its chassis, it is built for close-quarters annihilation of bug threats. Where the balanced Vanguard mech and the bristling Hammerhead handle versatility and frontline durability respectively, Sawtooth exists to carve through clustered enemies with brutal, area-adjacent strikes.

Lore & Background
In the fractured world of Into the Breach, the Vanguards are the last organized military response to the endless tide of Breach-born insects. Sawtooth was engineered for a single purpose: to meet a surging bug column head-on and shred it before it reaches civilian shelters or critical infrastructure. Its designers prioritized raw cutting force over armor, trusting that the mech would always be flanked by the sturdier Hammerhead and the adaptable Vanguard to cover its softer flanks.
The mech's saw blade is not merely a weapon but a signature. In the field, pilots report the distinctive high-pitched whine that precedes a Sawtooth engagement—a sound that has become as feared among the Breach creatures as it is recognized by allied Vanguards. The blade's rotational momentum allows Sawtooth to affect multiple adjacent tiles in a single activation, making it devastating against the clustered bug spawns that define most Breach encounters.
Within the Vanguard squad's tactical doctrine, Sawtooth is the 'anvil' that the other two mechs position enemies against. The balanced Vanguard draws aggro and repositions, Hammerhead absorbs the punishment, and Sawtooth delivers the killing blow. This triad has become the default formation for new Vanguards entering the field, and Sawtooth's role as the squad's offensive spearhead is rarely questioned.
In Their Own Story
The breach opened at 0400, a jagged tear in the asphalt where three days ago a parking lot had been. The swarm poured out in a chitinous wave, clicking and skittering, and the civilians in the shelter behind the barricade pressed their palms against the reinforced glass.
Sawtooth rolled forward on its treads, the saw blade already spinning up with a rising shriek that vibrated in the teeth of everyone watching. Hammerhead planted itself two tiles to the left, bracing its hammer. Vanguard shifted to the right, scanning for stragglers.
The first wave hit Hammerhead's plating with a sound like a dropped anvil. The mech didn't flinch. Sawtooth closed the distance, the blade catching the light in a strobing arc, and then the swarm simply… stopped. Tiles of bugs that had been skittering moments before were now still, split cleanly along their carapaces. The whine faded. The remaining insects scattered.
The pilot in the shelter raised a thumb. Sawtooth's blade spun down. Another breach, another morning, another wall of teeth doing what it was built to do.
Reader's Guide
Sawtooth — Pilot: Vanguard Squad Operator (unnamed in canon)
Base Stats: Sawtooth is a high-attack, moderate-HP, lower-defense melee unit. It trades the bulk of Hammerhead and the flexibility of the Vanguard for superior raw damage output in close range. Its stat profile makes it the squad's dedicated damage dealer.
Special Ability — Saw: When activated, Sawtooth's blade strikes all enemies occupying adjacent tiles, dealing significant damage to each. This makes it uniquely lethal against the clustered bug spawns that dominate most Breach encounters, where a single activation can thin an entire group of threats simultaneously.
Narrative Fit: Sawtooth enters the timeline as part of the Vanguard squad from the very first mission. It is one of the three mechs available to the player at the outset and remains a core option throughout the campaign and endless modes. Its role is constant: position it adjacent to a dense bug cluster, protect it with Hammerhead's tankiness, and let the blade do the work. As the campaign progresses and bug types grow more numerous and aggressive, Sawtooth's area-adjacent damage becomes increasingly critical for clearing the multi-tile swarms that later stages demand. It never changes form, never gains new abilities—its identity is the saw, and that identity carries from the first breach to the last.
In squad composition, Sawtooth pairs most naturally with Hammerhead (for frontline protection) and the Vanguard (for repositioning flexibility), forming the default trio that defines the squad's tactical identity throughout the game's timeline.
Did You Know?
- Sawtooth is one of only three mechs in the Vanguard squad, alongside the balanced Vanguard and the heavily armored Hammerhead, making it the squad's dedicated offensive element.
- Its special ability affects multiple adjacent tiles simultaneously, making it the most efficient single-mech option for clearing the dense bug clusters that define later campaign stages.
- The distinctive high-pitched whine of its spinning blade is referenced in the game's narrative text as a sound both allies and enemies recognize before combat begins.
- Sawtooth is available from the very first mission and does not unlock later; it is a starting option for players who choose the Vanguard squad.
