Vek Spitter (Acid)
Small, acidic, and always watching from two tiles away.
The Vek Spitter (Acid) is one of the most common frontline enemies in Into the Breach, a small organic Vek creature that hurls globules of corrosive acid at mechs from a short distance. It serves as the introductory ranged threat players encounter, establishing the core tension of the game: managing distance and positioning on the grid while protecting civilians and neutralizing the Vek before they overwhelm the field.
Though individually fragile, Spitters are often deployed in pairs or clusters, forcing pilots to choose between peeling them off one by one or committing to a burst of damage that might leave them exposed to other Vek. Their acid attack is a reminder that even the smallest Vek can chip away at a mech's hull, and their presence in nearly every early mission cements them as the baseline enemy type against which all other Vek are measured.

Lore & Background
The Vek are a collective of organic, semi-sentient organisms that have broken through the crust of the surface world, bringing with them a tide of smaller creatures that act as their limb and shield. The Spitter is among the most numerous of these creatures—a bulbous, low-slung organism whose primary function is to lob caustic secretions at anything that threatens the larger Vek formations. It is not particularly intelligent; it does not strategize or coordinate. It simply occupies a tile, waits, and spits when a mech enters its cone of range.
In the ecology of the Breach, Spitters fill the role of ranged harassment. The larger Vek—brute types, spawners, and the massive creatures that anchor a mission's objectives—rely on these smaller organisms to keep mechs at bay while they burrow, spawn, or advance. Remove the Spitters, and the larger threats become vulnerable to close-range mech attacks. This makes the Spitter a tactical linchpin: it is the first thing a pilot must deal with, and the last thing they can ignore.
The acid it produces is not merely a weapon but a biological defense mechanism, a caustic mucus that deters predators in the Vek's native subterranean environment. On the surface, that same secretion eats through alloy plating and scorches the ground, leaving the battlefield stained with greenish-yellow residue. Mech pilots have learned to respect it not for its raw damage but for its reliability: a Spitter will always fire if it can, with no hesitation, no cooldown, no mercy.
In Their Own Story
The grid was quiet for exactly three turns. Then the Spitter's maw split open with a wet click, and a bead of acid the size of a marble arced across two tiles, pitting a clean dent in the Goliath's shoulder plate. Rhea didn't flinch. She'd seen a hundred of these. The problem wasn't the Spitter—it was the Brute three tiles behind it, the one that would step forward the moment the Spitter fell, filling the gap like a jaw closing.
She shifted the Goliath one tile left. The Spitter's range shortened. One tile. Now it was in her punch range.
"Alright, little spitter," she muttered, more to herself than to the co-pilot. "You've got about two seconds of acid left in you. Make them count."
The Goliath's fist came down. The Spitter's body folded like a wet paper bag, a thin spray of acid sizzling against the rock. And behind it, the Brute's shadow stretched long and hungry across the grid.
Reader's Guide
The Vek Spitter (Acid) moves one tile per turn and attacks at a range of one to two tiles, making it a short-range harasser rather than a long-distance threat. It deals a single point of acid damage and has very low HP, meaning most mechs can eliminate it in one or two hits. Its primary tactical role is to keep mechs from closing on larger Vek by punishing any mech that enters its two-tile radius.
In early missions, Spitters typically appear in pairs flanking a larger Vek, creating a pincer that forces the player to choose which to engage first. As missions progress, Spitters may appear in groups of three or four, often paired with other ranged or spawning Vek, creating layered threats that require careful turn ordering. They do not evolve or combine into larger forms, but their numbers and placement become more aggressive.
Key counterplay: use a mech with a one-tile attack to eliminate a Spitter before it fires, or use a long-range mech to snipe it from outside its attack radius. If a Spitter is adjacent to a civilian, prioritize its removal, as its acid can threaten the civilian's tile. Positioning is everything—shifting one tile can move a Spitter from 'threatening you' to 'within your punch range.'
Did You Know?
- The Spitter is one of the first enemy types players encounter, making it the de facto tutorial enemy for ranged Vek threats in the campaign.
- Despite its low HP, a Spitter will always fire if a mech is within its range on its turn—it never 'passes' or hides, making it a predictable but persistent nuisance.
- In the Vek's tactical ecosystem, Spitters act as a ranged shield for larger creatures; eliminating them is often the first step in any multi-enemy encounter.
- The acid damage type is primarily a flavor distinction in Into the Breach; mechanically, all damage reduces HP the same way, but the visual effect of acid splatter is distinct from other attack types.
